You Just Got in a Fender Bender. Now What?
(Read This Before You Call Anyone)

Two cars involved in traffic accident on side of the road with damage to bonnet and fender

Your heart is pounding. Your hands are shaking. You just heard that awful crunching sound.

Whether you backed into a pole or someone rear-ended you at a stoplight, getting in your first accident is terrifying. Your mind immediately races to: “Are my parents going to kill me?” and  “How much is this going to cost?”

In that panic, you might think you need to call the 1-800 number on your insurance card immediately to “confess” what happened.

Stop. Take a breath. Call us first.

We are your insurance agency, which means we are on your team. Calling the insurance company’s hotline starts a formal process that is hard to stop. Calling us first gives you a chance to figure out a game plan.

Here is why you need to call our office before you do anything else.

1. We Need to Do the Math (So You Don’t Go Broke)

Insurance isn’t like a coupon; you don’t want to use it unless you have to.

You likely have a Deductible—that is the amount of money you have to pay out of your own pocket before the insurance pays a cent. It is usually $500 or $1,000.

  • Scenario: You accidentally scraped a bumper in the school parking lot. The repair costs $600.
  • The Trap: If you file a claim, you have to pay your $500 deductible, meaning the insurance only gives you $100. But now, you have an “accident”           on your record, which could double your monthly car payment for the next 3 years.
  • The Solution: If you call us first, we can help you do the math. It might be cheaper to pay for the repair yourself and keep your record clean.

2. The "It Wasn't My Fault" Rule

If the accident wasn’t your fault (like someone hit you while you were stopped), you absolutely should not file a claim with your own insurance if you can avoid it.

You want to file the claim with the other driver’s insurance.

  • Why? If you use their insurance, you don’t have to pay your deductible. If you use yours, you might have to pay that $500 or $1,000 up front and             wait months to get it back.
  • The Rental Car: Their insurance is required to pay for a rental car for you while yours is being fixed.

Calling us first helps us determine who is at fault so we know which company to call.

3. I Can Help You Break the News

One of the scariest parts of a crash is telling your parents. It’s always best to call them first but if your scared or worried we can help. If you call us, we can help you get the facts straight so you can present the situation clearly. Rather than panicking, it looks a lot more responsible when you say,

“Mom, Dad, I had an accident. I already spoke to our agent, and here is our plan.”

Your “In Case of Emergency” Checklist

Save this to your phone so you have it when your brain freezes up:

  1. Safety First: If anyone is hurt or the car is in a dangerous spot, call 911.
  2. Zip It: Be polite, ask if they are okay, but do not say “I’m sorry” or “My bad.” Admitting fault at the scene can hurt you later, even if you were just trying  to be nice.
  3. Photos: Take pictures of everything. The damage, the street, the license plates, and the other driver’s ID and Insurance Card.
  4. Call Me: Call our office before you call the 1-800 number.
  5. The Plan: We will decide if we are filing a claim or if the damage is minor enough to be handled differently.

Drive safe out there, but know that if something happens, we’re just a phone call away to help you fix it.
